BT Global Services – training needs analysis
How Xpertise developed a training needs analysis for around 1,200 people worldwide, within BT Global Services.
The Challenge
Before large-scale training programmes can take place, it is essential to first determine the actual training needs of the people to be trained. Without this initial training needs analysis, training can be wrongly targeted or not cost-effective.
BT Global Services needed to complete a training needs analysis (TNA) for around 1,200 people worldwide. Although the TNA needed to be comprehensive, feedback from some previous questionnaires was that while they had been good, they had been too in depth and taken too long to complete.
The Solution
BT Global Services approached Xpertise for help. Xpertise’s learning consultants worked with BT Global Services to understand what was required – including BT Global Services upcoming business and technologies strategies and future product deployment plans. This helped Xpertise to understand the scope of required future skills and how BT Global Services would prepare its workforce to get the most from its investment.
BT Global Services did have a catalogue of available training courses, but there was no way to plan learning paths through this for various roles.
Working with BT Global Services, Xpertise dramatically streamlined the training needs analysis questionnaire. This was also delivered as an interactive, form-based Microsoft Word document. Word was chosen for its near-universal format, and by building the questionnaire as a form, people would be able to tick choice boxes easily, rather than having to type in answers. This substantially reduced the time needed to complete the questionnaire.
Xpertise also produced a detailed report, to help BT Global Services with its education programmes – with recommendations on creating more engaging training frameworks, promoting the benefits of training internally (and so improving its uptake), and measuring the success and return on investment of training programmes.
