New year, new skills, new qualification

For many people, beginning a new year is a time of reflection: am I in the right job? Am I happy? Could I do better? Like many others, lots of managers will be thinking about their role and career. For many of the ‘unqualified’ managers – perhaps the New Year is time to go for a management qualification.

If you’re a manager without a formal management qualification, don’t believe for one minute that you are unusual. It’s estimated that only 20% of the UK’s four million managers have attained some kind of formal management qualification.

That doesn’t mean that the other 80% aren’t capable of doing their jobs – it just means that they attained their roles through promotion, on-the-job learning, years of experience and so on. But it does mean that the majority of managers are working in a less structured way than they might if they had some formal management training and a recognised management qualification.

For the minority who are qualified, they’ll know the benefits of a qualification. In a like-for-like interview or promotion situation, the qualification will give you the edge. In the eyes of your managers and directors, the qualification will be seen as a firm commitment to a management career – not that you’ve managed to float to the top by virtue of the Peter Principle.

Xpertise provides some great training courses for managers – training courses that lead towards Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications – along with CIM membership. These can help you to gain recognition for the work you do day-to-day and also gain new skills to enable you to perform your role better. On top of this, you could get a qualification that gives you greater recognition and helps you progress further and faster down your chosen career path.

Why not shake off that hangover and take on 2008 with a new goal: a new year, new skills – and a new management qualification?
